A Little Bit of History
Mr. Curtis S. Willmott, father of John W. Wilmott, owned a large tract of land which included the present site of Spring Valley Golf Club. He was married to Jane Armstrong Webb. Mr John W. Wilmott, who married Irene Etta Cruse, started building his home in 1936 and it was completed in 1938. This home is now the Spring Valley Golf Club Clubhouse. The architect was Mr. McMeekin and the stone work was done by Jim Guy. Mr. John Wilmott was very sensitive to fire hazards and he wanted his home to be as fireproof as he could make it. He used steel girders instead of wood, very thick stone walls, and lots of concrete. The partition walls as masonry, as well as the concrete floor upstairs and downstairs. The structure could possibly stand for centuries! Surrounding the club house were 392 acres in 5 tracts owned by John W. Wilmott who, on September 10, 1948, sold to L.R. Cooke and D.B. Midkiff. Cooke and Midkiff sold to Hugh R. and Leona Taylor. Starting in 1949, Hugh Taylor turned the present acreage into an 18 hole golf course and it was named Boiling Springs. The course was laid out by "Buck" Blankenship. In 1956, Boiling Springs folded and was run as a public course. In 1958, Helen Evans leased the property with and option to purchase. She never exercised that option. On Febuary 9, 1959, Hugh and Leona Taylor sold approximately 139 acres, including the clubhouse, to Hi-Acres Development Company and a new club, Spring Valley, was formed by the schneider family on August 30, 1959. This property was owned and managed by the Hi-Acres Development Company until January 1, 1977, when it was leased as a Member-operated Club, and the name changed to Spring Lake Country Club. Spring Lake operated the club until December 31, 1997. The Club came full circle on January 1, 1998, as the Schnieders again took over the management and operation of the club and renamed it Spring Valley Golf Club. The Club has had many golf professionals: Alvey Hume, Spud Rawlings, Mike Haywood, Ron Hacker, Abe Shannon, Jim Osborne, Buddy Bergan, Danny McQueen, Denny Biler, Stuart Beheler, Bret Feeney and Jimmy Masters.
